Mammoth Mountain Snow Report

12-24-2019 – Nothing like Christmas Powder and that’s what we have out on the hill this week with all the new light powder that has fallen.

Monday was awesome skiing through a total white-out from snow falling and low clouds. We found a good 7-10 inches of fresh from chair 25 over to the Faces of Three and Five.

The fresh powder was just the right consistency to cover up the old base while still having the feeling of being light and dry.

I have been skiing on the K2 mind-benders that are 99 underfoot, so much fun actually skiing in the powder and not on top of it. Give it a try, after a decade skiing on top of the powder it’s a whole new world getting deeper into the fresh, you also get more face shots.

The base out on the hill: Eagle Lodge 24-36 inches – Canyon Lodge 30-40 inches – Snow Study Site at Main 41 inches – Up top 72 inches – 11 Feet at the Sign at 11,000 Feet

All lifts are now running for the new winter season of course that is wind and weather permitting. Lift hours are 8:30 AM to 4 PM wind and weather permitting.

Spent some time on Lincoln Mountain on Monday, skied the East Bowl Side and all of the Avy Chutes. Coverage was great everywhere we went from the steeps to the lower angle tree runs. We must have got in 8 fresh powder runs and then we had some great packed out snow in Avy 1 and 2.

Let’s take a more detailed look at conditions on Mammoth Mountain from last week. (Not much change since I typed this report.)

The snow surface on the groomed runs is in a perfect packed powder condition with the groomed out snow being nice and soft.

With all the natural snow your skiing and riding on a soft non-man-made snow surface, it’s just a fantastic ride. I love it when you cannot hear your ski’s or board carving the snow.

Looking at the Top, Cornice Bowl is groomed, the surface has been affected by this week’s winds. It’s like a groomed out wind buff, carvable but a little firm compared to the intermediate groomers.

Climax is now filled in enough that you can ski it without much worry of hitting obstacles. The snow is a nice packed powder, but it’s not smooth still a bit of a rough surface.

St Anton is all filled in now and groomed out from 23 down to Main. They have not groomed the upper section that links to the bottom of Cornice that I have seen yet this season.

The groomers over off of 9 and 25 are also in great shape, even Back for More in the upper section has plenty of snow now. To note they have not groomed Gold Hill yet so you lose some vert heading over to QuickSilver.

It sure is fast and fun heading down the road from the top of 9 to Solitude and then into QuickSilver or Haven’t the Foggiest.

Lincoln Mountain has some great coverage on the Face and into all the Avy Chutes. I have not had the chance to ski them yet myself but all those runs look ready for some fun.

Took some laps on Chair 4, the snow over here was perfect, not many people skiing and riding in this area so the groomed out soft snow was still there on my last runs around 1 PM.

Some great skiing and snowboarding out on the hill right now, if you’re coming up for the Holiday’s you will love the snow we have out on the hill right now.

This is one of the better Decembers I have seen in a long time, lot’s of soft packed powder snow with weekly refreshers of fresh snow.
