Mammoth Snowman Update 11-14-2016

,

ski-renter11-14-2016 – 8AM – Hello from Mammoth Mountain, the ski area is open with Top to Main skiing and snow boarding.

If your coming up this week weather wise it’s going to get windy, cloudy and then finally cold once again with a few snow showers on Wednesday.

The real story for this week will be that the Mammoth Mountain Snowmaking system will be able to get going again. It looks like Tuesday night into Thursday they can blow none stop and then they will be able to blow 8-12 hours each night after that. Snowmaking looks good to go nightly now with no break thru Thanksgiving.

Along with the cold air, the snow showers we expect Tuesday night into Wednesday could bring 1-3 inches of fresh snow as well.

When will we get a decent storm in here? Hard to tell since the weather models we use are at odds still on a white Thanksgiving. The GFS has us getting several feet by late on Thanksgiving while the EC model is not even close to those amounts.

For today we will be back into the 50s at Main and then 40s on Tuesday with highs in the 20s on Wednesday. After that things warm into the 40s Thursday into Saturday.

For our complete weather discussion with charts and weather images use this Mammoth Weather link. Also to note Snowman’s Video Snow Report will start next week along with his Photo Snow Reports every Thursday.

The Snow Conditions, Base and What’s Open:

Out on the hill we currently have a base of 6-36+ inches from Main Lodge up to the top. The snow surface is a machine groomed snow that is firm early and then softens up during the day.  It’s kind like spring skiing in November down low. Up top there is some nice firm wind buff mixed in with some ice and suck pack. Chose your line carefully.

What’s open? Chairs 1 and 3 along with G1 and G2. Runs that will be open this week: Broadway, Saddle Bowl, Center Bowl, West Bowl, Cornice Bowl, Dave’s, Climax and the Drop Outs.14992039_10154557739328382_7611681279629484198_n

Broadway was in much better condition then Snowman thought it would be, sure it was a firm fest for the first hour, but it softened up enough for some fun turns as the sun came out. I did not see any rocks or bare spots on the main groomed run. However just off the groomed path watch out for ice and dirt spots.

Drop Outs are a ton of fun and getting better with each run. Snowman was using the entrance about 100 yards down from the top ridge right into Drop Out 3.

Climax is still very low tide so no go for the Snowman. I did watch people skiing and snowboarding via the Gondi and it looked real good. Just watch out for the low tide rocks and the slick spots.

Saddle Bowl is filled with all natural snow. The surface was a bit firm to get started, but with all the skiers and snowboarders it got better real fast. As the day went on things started to get a bit slick in spots. The sides of Saddle Bowl skied much better then right down the middle.
